Las Vegas NV-The Hoover Dam Bypass is just a few months away from being completed. Today Action News was able to see the progress that's been made on the monumental construction project, as workers race against the clock, finishing the final touches before it opens to the public.

The bridge portion of the Hoover Dam bypass has been officially named  the Mike O'Callaghan and Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. At this point, construction officials say they are on schedule and  right on budget; as this 7 year long $240 million engineering feat, reaches the finish the line.

In the shadows of a modern engineering marvel now towers a second one; side by side, unlike any others in the world.

"The bypass was actually 6 separate projects. The first one started in 2003...here we are in 2010 putting the final pieces together," said Dave Zanetell , project manager of the Hoover Dam Bypass.

An impressive architectural achievement for mankind; making this the longest concrete arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere sustained by massive concrete columns.

"We used about 4 million pounds of steel in the arch and 9 thousand cubic yards of concrete," added Zanetell .

Pedestrians will be able to appreciate a breath-taking view as they walk along the bridge, standing nearly 900 feet above the Colorado River, next to Hoover Dam. With the help of over a thousand workers and nearly 400 engineers, the 1,900 foot-long bridge is practically a done deal; as crews are now placing the last railings and paving the road lanes.

A team effort that includes the Nevada and Arizona Department of Transportation, along with a handful of federal agencies, who's goal all along has been to eliminate traffic and congestion around Hoover dam.

Construction officials plan on holding a special event October 16th titled "Bridging America," where the public will have the chance to actually walk on the bridge deck before it officially opens to traffic in November.
