Construction of New Container Terminal at Long Beach Port
Harbour Commissioners of the Long Beach Board have unanimously approved a $123 million dredging and wharf building contract which will officially start construction of the landmark Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project.
According to a press release, the project is one of the largest and most ambitious efforts ever taken by the Port of Long Beach.
The contract covers the first part of a $1 billion modernization and consolidation of two aging shipping terminals that will turn into one state-of-the-art container terminal. The new terminal will have twice the cargo capacity.
The first phase will include the dredging and construction of wharfs at the port. Construction will start this spring and is expected to take 22 months.
The contract was awarded earlier this week to a join venture of the Seattle basedManson and Connolly construction companies.
The project’s environmental impact report received approval from the Harbour Commission and the Long Beach City Council in 2009.
“We’re talking about a tremendously positive economic impact for this region – this contract alone will create 670 jobs over a nearly two-year period, and is one of the biggest contracts awarded by the Port,” said Richard D. Steinke, Port of Long Beach Executive Director.
“We’re looking forward to this first phase of redeveloping Middle Harbour.”
The project is set to reach its completion in nine years.
