Japan Nuclear Power Plant Construction Plans

Tokyo Electric Power Co is expected to submit a revised nuclear reactor construction plan to the government after its executive vice-president said this week that the operator of the crippled reactors in Fukushima has given up plans to build two more reactors at the site.


Tokyo Electric, Tohoku Electric Power Co and Japan Atomic Power Co, all affected by the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami in northeast Japan, did not release their annual power supply forecasts at the end of the business year in March and have yet to say when they will do so.    


Other power companies have said they are sticking to existing startup schedules for planned new reactors, although some have delayed preparation work or construction dates as concerns mount about nuclear safety following radiation leakage from the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi plant, in the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years.   


Although several Japanese government officials have stressed the continued importance of nuclear power as a key energy source,  political leaders have called for stricter safety measures and said there would be a review of the country's energy policy that would include promotion of renewable sources. 

   

A long-term energy plan unveiled last year calls for building nine new reactors by 2020 and at least 14 new reactors by 2030.........read more
