Caterpillar Launches iPhone App for Used Equipment

Leading UK business publisher The Moffat Group has developed an application for Apple's iPhone and mobile-friendly website for Caterpillar.
A new iPhone 'app' and mobile-friendly website from Caterpillar (CAT) has been launched. Updated in real time, the system provides pricing, specification, dealer location, machine comparison and contact information on approx 40,000 used CAT machines located across the globe. It also enables users to browse Cat Certified Used , which is only available from Cat dealers.
A pilot version of the iPhone app was launched in October 2010. Within a matter of weeks, it had been downloaded by customers in 65 countries worldwide. This prompted the creation of a more comprehensive app and a mobile-friendly version of the website. "Analyzing the number of users in our industry with internet enabled handsets made it an easy decision to go mobile. After evaluating several suppliers, we chose to partner with the Moffat Group. They had experience in promoting used equipment to the construction industry and experience with mobile technology" says Robert Gregus, e-Channel marketing manager.
Established in 1964, Moffat combines its knowledge of the construction industry with the latest technological capabilities and software. The company publishes Resale Weekly, the construction equipment magazine and online portal.
"After we created an app for our leading title Resale Weekly, we immediately saw the potential that mobile information technology holds for the construction equipment industry," says Daniel Moffat, managing director of the Moffat Group. "In this business professionals are not office-bound, they are more likely to be working on-site or travelling. Smart Phone technology - particularly in places like Asia where internet access can be unreliable or hard to find - provides the ideal solution. It removes travel constraints and allows companies to keep their customers fully informed and updated anywhere in the world".
The company has also established a new division - Moffat Consulting & Technology - to handle this new business stream and bring the Smart Phone technology to the construction industry.
"We are consistently working to improve the system, offering more features and better usability," says Moffat.
"These mobile tools are generating leads for the Caterpillar dealer network" says Mike Young, CatUsed product manager. "If the convenient time to search for equipment happens to be while commuting, Cat wants to be there. The Catused mobile platform and the iPhone app make that experience extremely simple" says Young.
